— Monte Vista
Unlike Beacon Hill, homes in Monte Vista are relatively expensive at a median price of $272,915. Monte Vista is the largest historical district in the United States and was designated an historical landmark in 1998. The area is home to approximately 3,000 people with a median age of 36.4 and a annual median income of $54,340.
Many of the houses in Monte Vista are very large and date back to San Antonio’s Gilded Age (the period between 1890 and 1930). Queen Anne, Prairie, Tudor and Spanish Colonial Revival-style homes represent the architecture of the neighborhood. It is estimated that about one-fifth of the homes are available for rent. Residents in the area enjoy a variety of budget-friendly restaurants located only 1.5 miles from downtown San Antonio.
Northwest
The Northwest area of San Antonio is one of the fastest growing areas in the city. Many new homes and subdivisions are in a continual state of construction. The residential growth has spurred a corresponding growth in industry and mixed-use developments in the area. Part of the northwest sector is outside of the San Antonio city limits, but is served by the Bexar County Government. Northwest San Antonio is home to the South Texas Medical Center, one of the busiest medical centers in the southern United States. The area is also home to the corporate headquarters of Valero, the University of Texas at San Antonio and Six Flags Fiesta Texas.
Northwest San Antonio features many notable neighborhoods including Helotes, Anaqua Springs and The Dominion. Also on the Northwest side are Camp Bullis and the wealthy city of Shavano Park.
— Helotes
In 2009, Helotes was dubbed a boomtown by the Gadberry Group as a result of its rapid increase in population (estimated at 252 percent since 1990). Situated 12 miles northwest of San Antonio on Texas Highway 16, Helotes occupies 6.71 square-miles and has a population of approximately 15,7000. Residents of Helotes have an annual median household income of $52,571. Helotes is serviced by the Northside Independent School District.
Helotes is known for its country environment with all of the conveniences and amenities of city living. Its motto is “Where the Hill Country Begins.” The area became an incorporated city in 1981, as San Antonio’s city sprawl encroached on Helotes’ borders. Primarily a residential area, Helotes has one well-known attraction, the John T. Floore Country Store. Not a store at all, but rather a country dance hall, the venue has hosted the likes of Willie Nelson and other legendary performers. In San Antonio, Helotes is best known for its annual Cornyval. This springtime festival dates back more than 40 years and celebrates the importance of corn in Helotes’ history. In fact, the name Helotes is derived from the Spanish word for green maize.

The east side has a predominately African-American population and a relatively low cost of living. The area is considered to be very family-oriented. One northeastern suburb, Wincrest, is renown for its elaborate Christmas light show. The Southeast area encompasses many historic neighborhoods, including Pecan Valley, which offers world-class golfing.
