It has been said San Antonio is a big city with the feel of a small town. For some years, it has been among the fastest growing cities in the United States, but has managed to somehow keep many of the small town traditions such as the wonderful 10 day festival each April known as Fiesta, The Texas Folklife Festival, and many other celebrations of this sort. Because of the large importance of our Hispanic culture, we have marvelous celebrations such as our Cinco De Mayo festival.
San Antonio is known as " The cradle of Texas liberty". The Alamo where a couple of hundred Texians fought to the finish against the large Mexican army of Santa Anna is right downtown and walking though it is free to the public. The Texians did not win that battle, but softened the Mexican army sufficiently that a short time later at the battle of San Jacinta, Sam Houston's troops defeated Santa Anna and gained Texas it's independence from Mexico.
Now to the the current San Antonio and practical reasons for living here. Nearly everyone moving here are astonished at the low price of housing here - always among the most affordable in the United States among major cities. This is a large reason why so many people migrate here, and why so many corporations locate here. having no state income tax is also a big plus which makes San Antonio a very affordable place to live.
The local economy is quite strong. in October of 2009, Business week ranked San Antonio as the most recession proof city in the U.S.
As the country ages, many people are considering where to retire. A book was written in 2007 entitled "Retire In Style:60 Outstanding Places across The U.S. And Canada. San Antonio was ranked #1 on this list in terms of being the best value. The criteria was based on climate, landscape, recreation, retail services, health care, transportation, cultural activities, community services, cost of living, quality of life, crime and work or volunteer opportunities.
The winters are temperate. On nearly any day, you can play golf, tennis, or engage in outdoor activities. If you like to fish or hunt, there are numerous lakes within 20 minutes of San Antonio, and the gulf coast is a mere 2 and 1/2 hours away by car. South Texas has some of the best deer hunting to be found in the U.S. Numerous hunting leases are within a short drive.
For spectator sports, well, we have the four time NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs. the purs make us all proud. They are always a competitive team and are wonderful citizens of the community.
San Antonio is the rare city that can be as vibrant as you like, or as laid back as you like.
