Public Health
— The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District
The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is the public health agency that provides public health programs to San Antonio and unincorporated areas of Bexar County. Services include health code enforcement, food inspections, immunizations, clinical services, environmental monitoring, disease control, health education, dental health, emergency preparedness and issuance of birth and death certificates to the public. Clinical Services available include family health, HIV/AIDS/STD services, immunizations, occupational health, international travel and TB Services.

In 2008, Metro Health began implementing changes that would help make it a high-performance health department. First, it integrated clinical preventive services with University Health System (UHS), thus combining preventative services and treatment of sick patients. UHS now manages 10 former Metro Health clinics that offer a wide range of clinical preventive services. Metro Health has also created a new service area called Population-Based Services. This new division focuses on chronic disease prevention, health education and wellness while utilizing evidence-based resources. For more information contact:

Military Medicine
As mentioned in the beginning of this chapter, San Antonio is home to Fort Sam Houston, the largest and most important military medical training facility in the world. Since the end of World War II, it has been the Army’s principle medical training facility. In 2005, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended that all military medical training be consolidated to Fort Sam Houston. The new consolidation will increase the average student load to more than 9,000 workers and will require an additional 4,000 in support staff. An estimated one billion dollars in construction will be required to accommodate the consolidation. Currently located at Fort Sam Houston are the Army Medical Department Center and School, Brooke Army Medical Center, the Southern Regional Medical Command (Provisional), Headquarters Dental Command, Headquarters Veterinary Command, the Institute for Surgical Research (trauma/burn center), the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute, and the Army Medical Department NCO Academy.

— San Antonio Military Medical Center
The San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) consists of the SAMMC North, the current Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) and the SAMMC South, the current Wilford Hall Medical Center (WHMC). BAMC is a 450-bed health care facility that can expand to 653 beds in the event of a disaster. BAMC provides level-one trauma and graduate medical education. Major services offererd include general medical and surgical care, adult and pediatric care, primary care clinics, a 24-hour emergency department, specialty clinics, clinical services, wellness and prevention services, veterinary care and environmental health services.

In 2009, at SAMMC North, construction began on a 738,000 square-foot Consolidated Tower (CoTo) located adjacent to the exisitng clinical building and medical mall. The CoTo will house administrative space, an Outpatient Pediatrics Clinic, an expanded Emergency and Trauma Department, SICU, CCU and Psychiatric Nursing Units and an expanded Pathology Lab. Correspondingly, construction began on a 5,000-space parking structure to accommodate the increased parking needs and a 5,600 square-foot central energy plant will be constructed to accomodate the facility’s additional energy needs.

The WHMC provides complete medical care to military health care beneficiaries in the South Central United States as well as specialized care to patients referred from around the world. The WHMC serves more than 16,000 annual inpatient visits and 700,000 annual outpatient visits. In late 2011 all inpatient and emergency care units will move from the WHMC to the SAMMC-North campus. The WHMC will remain open until the Lackland Ambulatory Surgery Clinic (ASC) is completed in 2014-15.
