Health and Wellness
quality health services for san antonio residents
Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio often referred to as the “Home of the Army Medic,” a title earned by being the largest and most important military medical training facility in the world. So pivotal are the operations at Fort Sam Houston that by 2011, all military medical training in the United States will be consolidated there. However, military medicine is only one facet of San Antonio’s vast health care network. In fact, the health care and bioscience industry is San Antonio’s premier economic generator, employing more than 116,000 and making a $16.3 billion economic impact. Consequently, San Antonio residents enjoy some of the best medical systems in the country, including numerous general hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, state hospitals, educational research facilities, surgery facilities and rehabilitation centers.

Due to the abundance of local health care options, an understanding of the various facilities can help you make the best choice for your family. The following pages of Relocating to San Antonio offer a guide to the city’s medical systems to help familiarize yourself with institutions in the area. From an examination of each major health care system, including services offered and future plans for new developments, this chapter will help you make the most informed decisions for health care in San Antonio.

South Texas Medical Center
2009 marked the 50th anniversary of the legislation that ultimately brought to fruition the South Texas Medical Center (STMC). Today encompassing 900 acres, STMC is the largest medical research institution and care provider in South Texas. Its staff of 27,884 oversaw 4,986,064 patient visits in 2008 alone. STMC includes 45 medical-related institutions, including medical, dental and nursing schools, medical treatment and research, 12 hospitals and five specialty facilities.

In 2009, the STMC added 2.2 miles of walking/jogging trail. Built as a means to help combat obesity and diabetes, the paved trail begins at a parking lot off Hamilton Wolff Road and continues through the surrounding wooded areas.

STMC has made many other recent improvements to their facilities and, with capital projects projected over the next 5 years totaling approximately $1.238 billion, STMC promises continued growth and advancements in the medical industry.
